So several weeks back my good buddy Doctor Merkury convinced me to go see a live Pro Wrestling event that was put on by an independent promotion called the SWO. I have not been to a live wrestling event in probably 15 years. We had an absolute blast and we started talking about gaming pro wrestling. I still own my copy of the old "WWF Adventure Game" from the early 90's which is a pen and paper rpg game. I remember it being a lot of fun so I set out to try and find some affordable figures. Luckily a company called Jakks makes these generic "Pro Wrestling Ring Starz" which use a lot of the same molds the company used when they were making the WWE "Micro Agression" line.

They make a 20 pack of these 2inch figures that comes with 20 Wrestlers, a ring, an d several weapons and props. I scored a couple of these for $15 a piece and was pretty jazzed. What you see above are the only three sculpts the set offers though, with only variations in paint jobs. So, I got out my Pro-Create sculpting compound to try and make some of these guys look unique. I'm a crap sculptor, but I'm pretty happy with the modifications and paint jobs so far. I used Fusion primer and I'm hoping the paint holds on these as they are gonna take more positioning and posing than your typical wargaming miniature. I also didn't really bother much with shading and detailing on these guys.

These first two are a tribute to two of the memorable characters from the old 8-Bit Nintendo "Pro Wrestling" game. Starman vs. The Amazon. Head Bite anyone?

These are wrestling versions of my friends Jayson and Todd. Todd is the black one.

This is a guy I made up called SharkBite. As soon as I painted the teeth I was in love with this story and was totally off and running conducting a back story for him.

The End of an Era

Below you will find what will most likely be my last 15mm effort. I was given the opportunity to help put together a big "All-In-One 15mm Zombie kit" for the Toys For Tots Charity Gaming Auction that will be held at "Fall-In" this year. I want to thank TMP's "Moe the Great" for all the work he's doing on this auction. I can tell just from the stuff I've seen him coordinating on TMP, that he really cares about this cause. THANK YOU! And thank you for letting me be a part of it! I painted up a whole mess of survivors and "Moe" was painting up a Zombie Horde, a terrain mat, and some terrain pieces. Since I'm getting out of 15mm, on top of painting up the new stuff, I am also throwing in a bunch of pieces from my collection before I sell it all off. On top of all of that, the guys over at Iron Ivan Games donated a copy of "No More Room In Hell". Our hope is that this will be the total package for anyone wanting to get into Zombie gaming or a huge expansion for anyone who feels like they never could have enough Zombie stuff.

Vacation Gaming!!!

I haven't been doing too much with miniature gaming lately. Slowly trying to finish a 15mm project. 15mm has completely lost my interest BTW. Anyway, most of my gaming lately has come in the form of board or card games. They're relatively quick, self contained, and way less labor intensive. Last week I was at the beach with the family and got some good gaming in. It's the one time of the year where I can break out some of this stuff without having to schedule a special night for the guys to come over and I love it. We just play whatever we feel like as we feel like it.

First up is Runebound. Notice those forearms, pasty white with absolutely no definition. Now those are gamers' arms.

Runebound is a fun lite RPG type dungeon crawl game. Each player takes a character and explores the given map meeting various creatures and villains and leveling up until they are ready to try facing Runebound's "endgame". This varies depending on what expansion you might have in play. Above is the character I drew...in his action packed sitting position.

Landrec the Lazy sitting old guy should have been his name. My character was still fighting green level monsters while my brother Daniel was whomping every dragon he could find...seriously Dragons tell campfire spook tales about my brother now...true story.

Daniel's Unstoppable Warrior of Awesome in the same town as my old guy...my old guy is taking a breather...he's old.This is the view from our gaming table for the week...I don't actually like to venture outside as being a pasty white gamer ensures that I will burst into flames at the slightest contact with Earth's sun.

Played several rounds of Settlers of Catan with my wife Lisa and our friend Jodi. Most gamers are pretty familiar with Catan but if you're not I usually describe it to people by telling them to imagine Monopoly if Monopoly didn't suck, was constantly fun and engaging, and didn't take a Vampire's lifespan to play, and there you have Settlers of Catan.

When you're getting beat you can can build fun little structures! It's like a game within a game!!!

Here's a shot of Jodi cutting a path of destruction across the island. This particular round of Catan was very frustrating for me. I was working hard to get a handful of wood the whole time but all I ended up with was a handful of sheep...um...that sounds a lot dirtier than it actually is.

Daniel and I also managed to play some Arkham Horror. This is the Lovecraftian game of drawing cards, counting sanity tokens, and managing complicated upkeep phases. Madness is just around the corner.

I got to play as the Psychologist...ooooh the psychologist...this was the vacation of boring characters for me. I did manage to put together a good assortment of spells though...I didn't know that psychologists were so well versed in the dark arts.

We drew Shub-Niggurath..which is just terrible. I immediately went insane after reading his game effects, like for real, in my head...where my brain lives. Arkham is pretty much the game that says "How many horrible ways can we punish the player for playing this game?" Don't get me wrong I actually really enjoy the game. You get a lot out of it as a Lovecraft fan and the punishing nature of it goes a long way in achieving the theme the game should achieve.

Here is my beautiful wife Lisa, oh don't be mistaken she didn't actually play Arkham Horror with us. Looking at the Shub-Niggurath card made her cry.

Believe it or not Daniel and I actually managed to win the game by sealing 6 gates. We never even had to fight Shub-Niggurath. That was fortunate as the beast's card pretty much reads "If you allow Shub-Niggurath to awaken and you fight him you are dead"

I didn't get pictures of everything we played but we also got a round of the deck-building game "Thunderstone" in and we played the Frozen Wastes expansion to Runebound. We had a great week. Got in lots of gaming and also did some beach stuff when my wife made me ;OP

I FINALLY finished these plastic Studio Miniatures German Zombies. It took a good month and a half longer than it should have. I did a fairly quick approach to these and actually used the dip method on then and then went over with some highlighting. They came out okay for a horde of zombies. I was one of the lucky ones that pre-ordered these. When they weren't released on time all pre-order customers received an extra 10 zombies worth of sprues. The miniatures are nice but the variety that you can obtain with them is pretty limited. Several more heads would have been nice with an easier way to swap them out. But for about 30 bucks I ended up with 40 zombies so I don't have any complaints. The mat these guys are standing on is my new Zuzzy ruined cityscape mat BTW.

Mummies Mummies Everywhere, but Not a Drop to Drink.....wait... is that how that goes?

Here are the mummies as a follow-up to my mummy hunters. As I wade knee deep through this project I'm trying to remember how it started. I know I was sitting on a bunch of really cool mummies that I picked up off a guy on TMP about two years ago maybe. That's what you're looking at below. The two character mummies are Reaper minis, but I really don't know who makes the rest, they're nice though. Mummies just seemed like an area of pulp gaming that was unexplored by our little local gaming Cabal, maybe that's what drew me in. The best part is that I've been watching some mummy movies here and there trying to get geared up for this...and I don't think I even really like mummies. HA! Well I have to make a tomb now....I'm in too deep now, stupid mummies. This guy is actually a Reaper model I had painted a long while ago for Supers. I went back and added some hilighting trying to make him look a bit sharper. I'm happy with how he turned out.

I got some pulp miniatures painted up for Where Heroes Dare!!! Most of these will be for a mummy's tomb table I want to put together for no real reason in particular, but there are a few other pulp odds and ends too. "Snakes, why did it have to be snakes?"

This is the Artizan "Not Indy" figure, but they didn't sculpt a whip onto him so this forced me to poorly sculpt my own whip...meh. The lady is part of the Blue Moon mummy set along with most of the figs in this post.

I think the guy on the far left is actually a Marine? I got him in a painting class at Historicon one year and thought he would make a good tomb explorer. I was going to paint his 'big socks' to look like rainbow leg warmers and crank up Olivia Newton John's "Let's Get Physical" everytime he hit the table, but I didn't want to get my ass kicked any more often than I have to.

The Adventures of Shooty McGee and Captain Burglar Alarm!

The other week some of the fellas came over and we played a round of No More Room in Hell. I ran the game and let the guys play. We had four players, each player was allowed to create a Shot Caller and then roll up two other random survivors using the random survivor generator and relying on luck of the draw. In attendance were Allen the lead archivist, Bob-O, The ROshon, and Chris of the One Zed a Year blog.I was a little wishy washy in planning the scenario. So I made it a standard Supply Run with players earning victory points for all of the essential supplies they could find (Food, Ammo, Fuel, First Aid Kits). I also put an ultimate objective in the center of town, a little red schoolhouse where a chopper pilot was barricaded in with a bunch of kids. If a player or players could get to the kids in the school and get them and the chopper pilot to the top of the firehouse they would score an auto win. Well my lack of focus in scenario planning basically resulted in all four of my compassionate friends saying "To hell with the kids, the school is the perfect meat magnet to pull zombies away from us!" This allowed players to more safely traverse the outer rim of the table while zombies were pulled in toward the school. "Safely" is a relative term in NMRIH as the game system tends to produce more than enough zombies to go around...as it should be.

ROshon started by running all three of the Survivors in his crew up to the nearest building...and not a single one of them could figure out how to open the door. Eventually they broke in and found some weapons.

Chris quickly earned the nickname "Shooty McGee" by opening fire on anything that moved within 30 feet of his team. This also had the pleasant result of loading up the Dice Grave (The Dice Grave in No More Room In Hell is the pool of dice where shots fired dice along with dice from other encounter events on the table end up and are then rolled during the zombie turn to generate new zombies) and drawing tons of Zombies into the area, nearly every turn.

Al, being a veteran zombie game player, had his crew roll in pretty quietly, not drawing too much attention to themselves.

...and then there was Bob-O imediately earning himself the nickname "Captain Burglar Alarm" when he tripped the home security system in the first house he explored, resulting in a whole buttload of extra dice being added to the Dice Grave.

Shooty McGee continues to "Scarface" his way down Main Street while Zeds engage some of his guys in Monstrous Melee. Chris did a good job fighting them off though.

Al dispatched a few zombies of his own.

Bob-O walks into the second house he encounters and finds an old icebox full of human remains that releases a stench into the air that increases the chance of new zombies being spawned for the rest of the scenario...way to go Captain Burglar Alarm.

Meanwhile the children in the schoolhouse await a rescue that ain't gonna happen, and the shamblers close in...poor little bastards.

Schoolhouse is Zombie-ese for "Boxed Lunch"

Chris sends his team to the firehouse to explore and that's when things start going south for him..

...and he suffers his first casualty at the hands of the undead.

Chris manages to get his team to another building but the Zombies immediately gnosh his second survivor and take a couple bites out of his Shot Caller.

Several Hordes of Zombies form outside of the schoolhouse and eventually the barricades fail to protect the poor helpless little children.

Chris's Shot Caller finally succumbs to the ganshing teeth and claws, eliminating his entire team.

Al's team makes a quiet exit managing to secure the most essentials.

Bob's team ends with an encounter against a large group of Zombies, but manages to put them all down.

As hordes of zombies finish eating the children and start heading out towards our remaining Survivors, the game is called as the living decide to make a quick exit off the table. Al ended up taking the win with the most combined Zed kills and essential supplies found.

Chris or "Shooty McGee" did manage to get over 20 zombie kills but as his entire team had been taken out of action, the points did not count.

Overall it was a good game, it was fun and it was good for me to have a really smooth run through the system. Next time I won't put a giant zombie magnet in the middle of the table.

I just finished up a batch of some Studio Miniatures zombie survivors. I did a few for some friends as late Christmas gifts, but I kept this one for myself. This the "Cole" miniature who bears a striking resemblance to the a certain big chinned Candarian demon killer. These miniatures were a blast to paint, probably the nicest I've ever painted. I have started picking up more 28mm stuff lately, especially a bunch of Reaper's new zombie survivors from the Chronoscope line. I'm having trouble focusing on 15mm right now.

I always wanted to try doing a fall foliage basing and found a great website that suggested using oregano. Loving to cook, but not being overly adventurous with spices I found our oregano still had the original seal on it. So here we go. I really like the effect.

My wife made me a personalized boardgame for Christmas! I knew she had been working on a special surprise for me the last several months but I had no clue what it would be when I was tearing it open on Christmas morning. She put together this multi tile boardgame for us with a bunch of the places we frequent, you'll notice a lot of restaurants (what can I say, we like to eat). There are other locations like church and family members' homes and such. She even incorporated vacations we take together. Each person has to complete a series of "tasks" or errands to win the game. The tasks are all personalized too and provide a lot of laughter. Lisa also told me that she has ideas for expansions....though she refuses to do a zombie themed expansion :O(
Not only did she do a great job designing the appearance of the game but knowing I am a gamer she really put a ton of effort into making rules that were fun and I have to say that I am very impressed. The game uses several different gaming elements and keeps the player interaction going so you always feel 'in the game'. It is light and it is actually a ton of fun (not just something I'd play because I feel obligated ;oP). This really is such a special gift and I am very lucky to share my life with such a wonderful, talented woman.

Doctor Merkury played Santa a little early this year and gifted me these awesome sinister miniatures available from WHAT THE?! Miniatures. I was told to give a big shout out to the company because "They were nice to him", he didn't elaborate on what that meant....it usually means something dirty, so I didn't ask any questions. They make an assortment of very fine Weird War II miniatures, I particulary like the Lilith and the Twins miniature and may be ordering her to lead my She-Wolves down the road.

Doc Merkury painted these great miniatures up fo me and they are awesome additions to my slowly growing Weird War II stuff. I'm looking forward to statting these guys up and fielding them. First up we have this fiery gentleman. 13 loyal German soldiers were sent through an experimental dimensional portal created by Nazi scientists...only one returned and he no longer spoke in words, but in flames.

Tramp Steamer...Take 2

After some discussion with TMP'ers I decided that I needed to go back and put a few more touches on this boat. I added a cargo boom and some rust/weathering effects. I found a really good site(lost the link) that had tons of pictures of old cruise ships and steamers that had been beached in India for scrap. I tried to duplicate some of the appearance of rust and weathering that I saw in the pictures on that site. I think it gives the boat a lot more character and am pretty happy with it now. The final effect makes it look like it's been through the ringer a couple times, but I like it. The before shot.

These Ascots Ain't Gonna Move Themselves!

Here are some in progress shots and final results of the first tramp steamer I'm building for my pulp crew. This first ship is meant to be more of a river runner, smuggling type boat. I took a lot of artistic license here and generally don't consider myself much of a model builder. Okay so I know that boats aren't generally perfect ovals but I wanted simple. You'll see later that I ended up shaping one end to a point to give the boat a more "realistic shape". It was the front end I did that to in case you're wondering.

Used a pretty flimsy posterboard for the hull, but it's what I had around that I cold shape and bend. It ended up warping a bit but nothing tragic.

I took a piece of foamcore in the shap of the boat and peeled off the paper from one side. Then I made lines with a pen to make the texture of boards for the deck. The effect is alright.

The finished cargo hold. I named the ship after one of my other favorite smuggling ships.

Put a Pulp Figures deck gun at the front of the ship (what do boat riding guys call the front?). I don't know if ships like this ever had guns in the front like this, but I figured if a boat was ever sailing into Cthulhu, they'd be glad for a front gun.

The little bits and bobs are all from Reviresco. Cool detail stuff. Probablythe only saving grace of the thing frankly. The ladders are dollar store train tracks.

I made a litte gangplank for the ship's crew to use when docking in exotic ports such as scenic Innsmouth and the Black Lagoon.

All in all I'm pretty pleased with the results. It's a pretty fun little piece of terrain to compliment my tramp steamer guys. The next project is a 3-4 foot long tramp steamer with several levels and areas that would act as a full terrain board for "on ship" encounters.

A Whole Pile of Pulp!!!

So, no joke, these figs have been sitting on my work table for about 10 months now while I kind of stopped everything to write "No More Room in Hell". Now that the books all done and published I finally managed to get back to painting and I've really enjoyed it. Most of these figures are Pulp Figures tramp steamer guys. One of my next projects is to build a couple boats for these guys and maybe some kind of special nefarious seafaring vessel for my Pulp Figures Cultists so that they can all square off. Plus now with these guys done I'll have someone to face off against my Creature From the Black Lagoon. Do these ascots make us look FAAABULOUS!?!?!

Doc Merkury says the purples and reds are hard to shade, but I couldn't achieve Navy Blue to save my life on these two. Oh well. TOYS!!!!

Last night we got some use out of my new Studio Bergstrom fighters. We're using a homebrew system. My goal was to accentuate fighter squad combat and dogfighting. The capital ships are very abstracted to act as gun platforms and objective points. They fight but they're very slow and not the focus of the game. It was a pretty fun playtest and I think we worked out some kinks that will give us a pretty fun light starfighter game. Some highlights: Is there anything more beautiful than a table full of dice and little toy spaceships?

So, I got the Zombie book all wrapped up on my end and I've been geeking out hard on Star Wars lately. This is one of those projects I've wanted to do ever since I saw the Studio Bergstrom miniatures site. Plus they are such great likenesses of the ships that I fear an iminent stormtrooper attack on the guy selling them so I pulled the trigger and bought a couple fleets worth. I've tried rounding them out with some of the WOTC starship battles ships and various other toys. We had a playtest of "Where Copyright Infringements Dare!!!", Doctor Merkury's rules for Star Wars like skirmish battles. Doc asked me to set up a table with lots of platforms and walkways that characters could be thrown off of. I spent two hours Thursday night setting up this Bespin inspired table using some old necromunda stuff, some Kenner toys, and scraps of plexiglass. For the record Doc spent most of the game complaining about how there was no cover on the table. There's just no pleasing some people.

We had a light side team and a dark side team with 3 players each. Each player got to wield one force user along with some troops and various supporters. Our objective was to search droids on the board until we found a Jedi Holocron and then get the Holocron to the pickup point on top of the gas storage chambers. Anakin makes the first move scoping out the situation.

The droids move in, "Roger roger"

"Hey Guys! Look at these bitchin' AT-RTs we brought, they should be a ton of help!"

"OH FOR THE LOVE OF YODA!!! The AGONY!!! My flesh is burning!!! The AT-RTs were no help at all! Who would design a vehicle that looks like a chicken!?!? WHO!?!?!?"

Obi-Wan inspects the first droid and finds an explosion in the distance.

An R2 unit guarding the secret entrance to a trash compactor. An invisible trash compactor.

Commander Matt sends his team off to negotiate peace with the clouds.

Anakin starts getting itchy to run down the "Walkway of Doom"

"Where's that fool going?"

"NO ANAKIN! ANAKIN NO!"

"Anakin, be mindful of your surroundings. Reach out with the force, what do you sense? Don't rush into danger. Anger is the path to the darkside. Your rage will be your......you're not even listening to me are you?" ~Obi-Wan

Anakin rushes over to the Trade Federation forces screaming, "I'm the chosen one, bitches!"

An epic lightsaber duel ensues between Anakin and Massage Temptress, "Jedi boy, Jedi boy. You give me ten dolla I give you 'Force Release"

Anakin, considering the possibilities of "Force Release", is struck down, but he did manage to take a bite out of Asaaj.

Ventress regroups with Count Dookie

Grievous shows up out of nowhere with a squad of droids. I seriously had forgotten he was over there. This was unpleasant.

Luckily, clones and Wookies were in position and able to knock out a few of the droids.

Clones fire on Jango Fett as Obi-Wan sneaks by with the Holocron in tow.

Master Samuel L. Windu engages Count Dookie, and wipes him out. "I am motherf*&king sick of this motherf*&king Dookie on this motherf*&king platform"

I never realizd how many Chewbaccas I had

Obi-Wan force jumps up to the top of the Gas storage Tanks, the end is near.

Obi-Wan's clones join him and one more force jump later the game is over.

Good times. This is the first time I've been really excited about a game in awhile. It was cool. I am really looking forward to playing again. Thanks Doc Merkury.

Supers are sent to the surface an meteor fast approaching Earth, to see what they can do. When they arrive on the meteor's surface they find that a team of villians has also landed and that the meteor is not all it seems as it contains remnants of intelligent life as well as the prescence of the OMNI-BOX! Killshot teleports and immediately swipes the Omni-Box, yoink.

BRIX lays out Barnabas the Vampire but Brainjob immediately uses his super-mind powers to attack. The first attack is rolled and BRIX manages to outwit Brainjob. "Really Brainjob? You couldn't outwit a 7 foot tall pile of rock?" the Red Devil says. "I'll show you the might of my squishy pink matter!!!" screams Brainjob as he takes a second mental attack and puts BRIX down for the count with an explosive brainjob. "You just got brainjobbed!" says Brainjob. "Don't say that too loud", replies Red Devil

The ground begins to rock around the feet of the supers as the omni-box springs to life and chunks of the meteor burst up under their feet as the supers find themselves on floating shifting chunks of space rock!

Doctor Mekury's face is kind of doing an Event Horizon thing. I must not have had a setting right, all the pictures came out goobly...that's a photography term meaning 'full of goobness'.

Den starts fiddling with the Omni-BOX and accidentally turns himself into the OMNI-CREATURE!!!.......which was ultimately uneventful.

The game was pretty fun. The Rocks would move every few activations and could collide into each other, which did happen once. There were some good suggestions for streamlining things next time so that it's easier to travel across the moving space rocks. Ultimately the villians ended up kind of trapped on one side of the board and we decided to call it a night. Good times.

Last week we had our first playtest of "No More Room in Hell", the new zombie rule set that I'm writing for Iron Ivan Games. The rules are based on Doctor Merkury's "Where Heroes Dare!" pulp rules. Players create Survivors that will have to make their way through the zombie apocalypse. The game will include extensive campaign options that will show the wear and tear that a Survival Party suffers from repeated encountes with the living dead and with unfriendly survivors.

I don't want to give too much away at this point, the game went pretty well, and we had a lot of fun. The playtest definitely showed some of the things that still need tweaking and gave me some new ideas as well.

I'm a LOOOONG time zombie fanatic and I've really been working hard to try and make this game encompass all the things that I've wanted to see in a zombie game and I'm hoping that zombie fans will REeeeALLY dig this book, it's going to have a lot of flavor and zombie fans will hopefully have a smile on their face when they read this one. 15mm Post Apocalyptic Zombie Tiles

So I got the idea for these 6x6 terrain tiles while watching Akira with Doctor Merkury, more specifically the tiles with the burnt out cars( I had planned for some time to break up pieces of the Child Guidance building sets for 15mm ruins). The idea came while watching Tetsuo or Toshio, or Yu-Gi-Oh, or whatever the hell his name was blow up big chunks of Neo Tokyo. Anyway, I ordered a bunch of pre-cut MDF boards and started making these up. The cars are all dollar store cheapies. I'm pretty happy with the results. The tiles will fit nicely on my city streets gaming mat that I made and should look pretty cool for my zombie games and post apocalyptic games. In case anyone is wondering the LOTR 15mm fantasy projects will be put indefinitely on hold. I am doing some commission work right now as well as a secret zombie project with Doc Merkury.....more on that later.

The human fantasy army foot soldiers are finished and next I'll be moving onto the mounted troops. These were block painted and dipped and frankly that's sufficient for me on these miniatures. The pace of this project is going a little faster than I thought so I'm hoping I can keep that going. We'll see.

My newest project is 15mm Lord of the Rings. To accomplish this I am using a big lot of 15mm medieval Teutonic knights I got on TMP. Now I was very happy with the deal I got. 200 or so miniatures for less than $50. Doctor Merkury makes fun of me for buying "Polish Knights" though and keeps asking me if they're riding their horses backwards.......I have the worst friends ever. I don't really know what manufacturer these came from, some of the pieces are really nice and some are kind of "meh". At any rate I will be doing a very "quick and dirty" paint job on these. They are just going to be a kind of generic human fantasy army for me. I plan on laying down some block colors and then doing a "dip" style wash for shading. I may go back over and do some highlights, but we'll see. After this army is finished I will move on to my Eureka 18mm Man-Orcs. I have over 200 of those waiting in the wings....sigh. They are very nice though and I hope to put more work into them than I will the humans. They will be playing the part of the "Fighting Uruk Hai" as opposed to the "Peaceful Resolution Uruk-Hai" or the "We Go Antiquing on Weekends Uruk-Hai"

So I plan on basing these up on 40mm x 40mm squares. I am planning on using Fantasy Rules! by Chipco and there are some other rules coming out this year for mass fantasy battles using the 40x40 basing. I may be doing some 28mm Pulp Figure tramp steamer crew in between painting these for variety. I'll keep updates posted. This is a pretty big project for me and frankly I get distracted easily so I am realistically hoping to get this human fantasy army and the Orc army finished sometime in 2010.....we'll see how that works out for me.

In Search of the Lair of Kong Fang! Where Heroes Dare!!!

So we got together tonight to playtest Doctor Merkury's Where Heroes Dare!(available from Iron Ivan Games and fine game retailers everywhere) scenario for Cold Wars in a couple of weeks. This was actually the middle of 3 scenarios the good doctor will be running and allowed us to break in the Great Wall of China table he built. This scenario set heroes trying to uncover the entrance to Kong Fang's underground lair against the villians trying to keep the heroes out. Be warned that most of the pictures I have, concern only what was happening on my side of the table and this battle report will be told through a very selfishly skewed lens :o) The Heroes side of the table: Two Teams of American Rocket Troopers and a team of elite characters.

Kong Fang and his loyal Fu-Dog move safely behind the cover of their animated statue.....OF DOOM

Lobster Johnson stares blankly at a DARE! location as if to say "I'm really more of a 'killin' stuff' kind of guy, not so much a 'figurin' out stuff kind of guy"(that was Doctor Merkury's not mine). Meanwhile mere feet away the Shadow learns that, no matter how badass his crimson scarf looks, pistols just have very little effect on a giant animated bronze statue......OF DOOOOOOM

The villians manage to locate Kong Fang's secret entrance, and have 3 turns left to defend it. "Hey! They got a giant animated bronze statue of doom over here too....how nice for them."

Professor Frankenbeans starts to make his way towards the secret entrance, on his way he managed to disintegrate a cultist and a Chinese henchman. Meanwhile, The Shadow managed to unearth some evil chanting pottery.....OF DOOOOOM. The evil chanting psyches out the characters causing anyone activating within 12" to take a Maxie test to be able to activate. This really slowed down Kong Fang and his animated bronze statue.......OF DOOOOOOOM.

I'm like the Annie Liebowitz of miniature photography...... No I'm just kidding, I'm like a retarded monkey with a broken Polaroid

Kong Fang's seductive daughter and her zombie minions enter the guard house ruins to head the elite characters off at the pass......meanwhile the US Red Rockets are outside....doing stuff.

I was certain this moment spelled the doom of Lobster Johnson and Professor Frankenbeans, somehow Lobster Johnson managed to strike down Kong Fang's daughter (I keep calling her that because I forget the character's name...let's call her Ding Dong). So anyway once Ding Dong was struck down all of Ding Dong's zombies collapsed.....Ding Dong.

So in summary, our game of Where Heroes Dare could have been called Where Heroes Achieve Mediocrity and Shame. Outside some of the Red Rockets managed to get up to the secret entrance but were immediately pinned so they could not contest the location. The "elite" heroes made it halfway across the guard house ruins, and managed to bag up a respectable body count while taking little damage themselves, but they just couldn't cover enough ground to help out.

The game was a ton of fun, there were good friends, and delicious pie. Life is good.

Alright so I got tired of Doctor Merkury telling me I need to put posts up on my blog, so I finally got some stuff done. Not much, but here are the first of many pulp figures that my loving wife got me for Christmas. This first guy is the evil Nazi leader with his mysterious metal head. The swatstika (is that how you spell that?Meh) was a giant pain in the butt. After about 7 tries I was about to say to hell with it, draw a happy face on the armband and call him "Repentant Mysterious Metal Head Nazi". Doctor Merkury would love it.....

The Ghost That Walks!

So, I must have been extra good this year, 'cause my buddy Doc Merkury got me this aweosme Phantom miniature for Christmas. We got snowed in up here in the U.S. northeast yesterday so in between wrapping my wife's gifts and working on some secret Christmas projects for her I was painting this guy. I was taking inventory of things and I'm pretty sure this is the ONLY 28mm miniature that I actually painted in 2009. I've spent the whole year painting 15mm miniatures. For the record I've painted about 400 15mm guys this year. After working on all those little guys for so long I found this miniature to be an absolute joy to paint. It's like swinging a baseball bat with a metal doughnut on it and then taking it off.... kind of. I've loved the character since I was a kid, and the sculpt is beautiful and I am very happy with how he turned out (I forget who Merkury said makes this figure but it's great).

So, I finally brokedown and watched all of the show "Firefly" and the movie "Serenity". It came strongly reccomended by my sister in law, Melissa and my good friend Sir John "TurkeyMitts" Hogan. I had bought these minis from GZG awhile back. I knew they were based on the show but had bought them just on the strength of being cool sci-fi minis. Getting through the series inspired me to pick up my brushes.

My "Simon" came out looking like a young Albert Finney with a bad case of "Bitter Beer Face". Oh well, I don't think I'm ever going to get any better at painting and I'm ok with that.

Modern 15mm Gaming Mat

So I know that this isn't that big a deal or anything, but it's something I've wanted to make for a long while now and finally just got enough of a fire lit under my ass to do it. What you're looking at is a city steet gaming mat for 15mm. I wanted something with city blocks, sidewalks. and street lines basically painted on it so that the mat would have a little more detail than just throwing down a black mat like i do in 28mm. I figure once I make some ruined modern buildings it will look good as a post apocalyptic city or Zombie infested city.

For any of you out there that give a d*mn, sorry it's been so long since the last update. I have been working on some commission stuff for some other people and haven't been painting anything of my own. Here's something I finished awhile ago but didn't get to post. It's my little tribute to the finest actor and most dynamic character from the film "Maximum Overdrive"......the Evil Toy Truck

I put together a scenario for the guys in our club to try out their new created characters in King of the Hill brawl. The rules were pretty straightforward. The players each had two characters a piece and had to get their characters to the top of the pyramid and stay there for 3 turns. Their final turn up top had to be uncontested. If you suffered knockback that knocked you of the top of the pyramid then you'd have to restart your turn count when you got back to the top. Also to add a little excitement, once the first character set foot on the pyramid this act desecrated this ancient ground causing one rock spire to fall toward the pyramid each turn potentially crushing characters.

Brix and Uber Hitler(formerly known as repentant Hitler) approach the pyramid....somewhere in the distance Paula Abdul's "Opposites Attract" can be heard.

A member of the Assassin League(whatever that is) is the first to make it to the top of the pyramid. She can be heard saying "this isn't going to make me a human target is it?". In the distance Star Phantom and TESLA approach and the assassin is........

.... Immediately hurled via alternating current off the top of the temple and to the other side of the table.

Brix and Uber Hitler are crushed hard by a stone spire, failing their Agility roll and taking damage. Somewhere a Paula Abdul record scratches to a halt. Uber Hitler is torn a new Panzer Faust-hole while Brix laughs off the damage like so many foam rocks.

I call this "Portrait of an angry vending machine, not appeased by upskirt"

Battle ensues on the top of the temple while fighting around the base gets vicious, name calling and whining ensue amongst the players.

On top of the pyramid, a finger points signaling something clearly dramatic happening.

Battle at the top of the pyramid got hot and heavy as our friendly local game store, Six Feet Under Games, was about to close. Players fought to a stalemate and according to the rules in case of a stalemate the winner shall be......

David Hasslehoff. Because even Super Heroes know that you don't hassle the Hoff.

So here are the buildings I made from the Child Guidance Toys. What makes them great for gaming is that the floors are stackable. So I painted them up and put cardboard floors on each level so that figures can be placed in each level. I ended up with way more buildings than I imagined so I'll probably be trading some or putting some up on eBay. Keep an eye out.

Burning Ring of Fire- Scenario for SuperSystem

“I Fell Into a Burning Ring of Fire”

In this scenario Fire has claimed 2 buildings already and is spreading down both sides of the street.

Setup: Line two sides of a street with buildings. At one end of the street place a ruined building on both sides of the street. Place various vehicles along the street as well. Place civillian miniatures in all the buildings along the street.

Heroes are here to rescue as many civillians from the flames as possible. Villians are here to hinder them as much as possible by blowing up cars or simply disabling the heroes via combat. It is a good idea to have the heroes outnumber the villians by a coupl of models, there is a lot of work to be done.

Fire is spread or put out in the following ways:

Initiative:
Villains- If a villain player wins the initiative roll they are allowed to add 2 small sized fire markers to the board for each Initiative goal rolled above the highest Hero Initiative roll. These new markers must be placed adjacent to any existing flame marker on the board.
Example: The Hunter(Hero) rolls an Initiative of 3 successes and Sam Hain (Villain) rolls 5 successes. Sam Hain is now allowed to place 4 small sized fire markers

Heroes- If a Hero Player wins the initiative roll they are allowed to remove 1 small sized fire marker from the board for each Initiative goal rolled above the highest Villain Initiative roll. These markers can be removed from anywhere the Hero player chooses.
At anytime during the scenario if a vehicle is ‘wrecked’ it is considered destroyed and generates a new fire marker on top of it where the vehicle lies. For placement of new fire markers the new marker can be touching any part of the wrecked vehicle to be considered adjacent.

To ‘Wreck’ a vehicle, unopposed, the following must happen:
-For normal cars (sedan, SUV, Pickup) the player must roll 3 successes on a Strength or Ranged Combat damage roll.
-For a heavier or larger vehicle (Construction Vehicle, dump truck, tractor trailer, train etc.) the player must roll 4 successes on a Strength or Ranged Combat damage roll.
-For reinforced vehicles (Armored Cars, Tanks, etc.) the player must roll 5 successes on a Strength or Ranged Combat damage roll.

A vehicle is also considered ‘wrecked’ if it is successfully thrown.

A flaming ‘wrecked’ vehicle can still be used normally as a weapon. ‘Wrecked’ merely means it will no longer function well for its intended purpose.

BURNING DOWN THE HOUSE
When a building is touched by newly generated fire markers the new markers are placed on top of the building’s roof. The building becomes ‘engulfed in flames after the 3rd Fire marker has been placed. Replace all smaller fire markers on the building with an Inferno marker. Each subsequent turn from when the inferno starts the Inferno will ‘Burn Through’ the floor below. The Inferno remains in place once it reaches the first floor of a building.
Eg. At the start of the turn following the generation of an Inferno remove the roof of the building place the inferno on the floor below, at the start of the turn after that, remove that building story and place the inferno on the floor below.

Any Civilians on a floor that is “Burnt Through” are immediately lost.

Roll 1D6 for any Civilians on the floor that is being burnt down to. On a result of a 1,2, or 3 are immediately lost. Any Civilian rolling a 4,5, or 6 are place to the edge of the building and considered to be screaming out the windows for help. Any heroes in this situation automatically jump out of the way to the edge of the flames.

Any character on the floor of a building that is “Burnt Through” immediately take a STRENGTH 6 hit resolved normally using the character’s Damage Resistance pool.
Any hero KO’d in this way is considered ‘Coup De Graced’ and will have to roll on the ‘Coup de grace’ table after the scenario is finished subtracting 2 goals from his/her resolve roll.

FIRE BAD!!!!!
Any character coming into contact with a fire or inferno template for any reason (thrown, knock back, fire generated on top of, etc.) takes an immediate strength 4 hit.
Any hero KO’d in this way is considered ‘Coup De Graced’ and will have to roll on the ‘Coup de grace’ table after the scenario is finished subtracting 2 goals from his/her resolve roll.

Roll 1D6 for any Civilians touched by a fire template. On a result of a 1,2, or 3 are immediately lost. Any Civilian rolling a 4,5, or 6 are considered to have jumped out of the way and placed 1” from the edge of the fire template on the side that they were closest to.

HERE I COME TO SAVE THE DAAAAY!!!!!!!
Heroes have the chance to earn extra experience in this scenario by rescuing civilians trapped in the burning buildings. All heroes are considered able to carry on civilian at a time unless possessing an ability that states otherwise.

Heroes earn +1 scenario XP for each person successfully carried out to the street.
Villains may negate this experience and earn +1 XP by carrying a rescued victim back into the burning building if they are feeling so nasty.

BACKDRAFT
The battle ends once one side is defeated. Experience earned from saving people can only be earned while the battle is still taking place (it’s easy for a hero to run into a building to save someone if he’s not getting shot at).

The Villains are on the scene first having started the fires and are considered defenders.
Any villain still standing at the end of the battle earns +3 XP
Any villain that is out of action at the end of the scenario earns 1 XP

The Heroes arrive on the scene with the intention of saving as many civies as possible all the while fighting off the advancing villains.
Any Hero still standing at the end of the battle earns +2 XP
Any Hero that is out of action at the end of the scenario earns 1 XP

Any character that was taken out of action by coming into contact with fire or falling through a floor when it is “Burnt Through” subtract 2 goals from their resolve roll when rolling on the after scenario table.

So I went to a train show a few weeks ago and made a dark and terrible discovery.....wait, is that right? No I think I meant totally radical discovery. I introduce you to Child Guidance Toys building kits from the 1960's

This beautiful little toy from the era of Mama Cass allows you to build all kinds of different structure and works very nicely with my 15mm Rebel Minis. Every piece has a perfect brick pattern and the pieces allow you to build individual floors of the buildings so your zombie hunters can go exploring for ammo and canned goods and Linnea Quigly and what not. If you don't like the toy roofs that come with you can paint them or build your own roofs. You also will have to cut up some cardboard so that each story has its own floor, but that shouldn't take long.

I snagged a big bag of this stuff at the train show and a couple other sets off of ebay and should be in good shape to build a whole zombie city with these as well as a whole zombie suburb. If you go on ebay I suggest searching "child guidance toys", "guidance town", and "constructive thinking". Notice that I bought what I wanted at wonderful discount prices before letting this secret out. Sorry, I'm kind of a bastard that way. Seriously though there are a couple of these kits up on ebay right now or check out yard sales and flea markets and maybe you'll luck out. I will post pics of finished painted buildings once I've finished painting my 330 15mm Rebel minis that are on the workbench at the moment........

So some other things of note that took place at the train show was that my buddy Jerry and I kept seeing this middle aged African-American dude walking around all day. This wouldn't be that interesting except that he was wearing a hat that simply read "Rob Base". Jerry and I figure that after the hit song "It Takes Two to Make a Thing Go Right" slipped off the charts that Rob Base retired to Maryland where he embraced obscurity and the model railroading hobby......

We also found out that they sell hooker and stripper figures for "o" gauge trains. The hooker pack was labeled "Steet Hookers".....that's right "Steet"
